West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar and party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took part in a protest on Wednesday, demanding a swift trial and strict punishments for the culprits responsible for the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The protest reflects the growing outrage over the tragic incident, which has shaken the medical community and raised concerns about safety in state-run hospitals.
The Supreme Court has also taken up the case as a suo motu matter, with the next hearing scheduled for September 30. Initially listed for September 27, the hearing was deferred by a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud at the request of the West Bengal Government's counsel. The state government is expected to present updates on the investigation and the steps being taken to ensure justice for the victim.
Earlier, during a hearing on September 17, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing West Bengal, assured the court that the Chief Minister had promised no punitive action would be taken against doctors who had returned to work following protests organized by the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front.
The incident has sparked political tension, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP has accused the state government of failing to provide adequate security, further fueling the ongoing war of words between the two political parties.
